We are living in the age of science. Everyday new invention are being made for the good of humanity. The scientific inventions began after the industrial revolution of 1789. Within these 200 years, science has made a wonderful progress. The aeroplane is one of the most important inventions of science during the modern ages. It is the fastest means of transport known so far. An aeroplane resembles a flying bird in shape. Inside there are seats for the passengers and a cabin for the pilot. This cabin is called a cockpit. It has an engine taking off it runs on the runway for some distance to gather speed. Then it suddenly hops up the earth and takes off.

Q.2 Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below :   (5)                                                               

Our ex-president and scientist Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam taught only for a year at Annamalai University. Later he worked as a scientist and did such important work in the field of space research that he is known as the ‘Missile man of India’. After his retirement as chief scientist officer to the Government of India in 2000, Kalam set out with the task of interacting with a million students. The tally went at over 1.2million as every day he met groups of students in Bihar, but the largest gathering he addressed was in Adichun-chanagiri where he talked to 50000 students. Schools viedwith each other to invite the president.

In this interaction with students he wanted to bring focus on the utility of education and its role in the development of India. He and his team also responded to hundred of e-mail queries from students. His message was simple and direct. It was that students should open up their minds and study well so that they could help India to be developed country. Is target was to make India a developed nation by 2020. His autobiography’ wings of fire’ first published in 1999 has sold 2.5 lakh copies and the other famous book 2020 : A developed nation over 1 lakhs copies. These books have also been translated with regional languages.

When he talked with teachers, educationlist and principals he asked them questions on text books for 21st century and use of technology in education. He was also keen to know how the schools rich to the poor in slums and villages. 

Even after his retirement as the President he continued his work till his death on 27 July 2015. He was addressing a meeting of students then at Indian institute of management Shillong then.

I am fond of playing cricket. I am bowler. But when our openers lost their wicket fast, the captain sent me too bat. I was nervous. On the other end Ramsubhag was a good batsman. I gave him chance to play his cricket strokes, but he was caught on 45. I started hesitantly. Slowly the score built and my confidence returned. I got a beautiful six, then a four. The other team lost their courage. They made blunders in fielding. The score move steadily. Finally, I crossed fifty. On the other end wickets fell, Still we continued. In the 49th over we won the match. My bowling and batting made me a hero. I always remember this as a very good match.
